Is this play legal? Why don't they do it?
Jets at the 50. Mark Sanchez throws a 5 yard slightly high pass that Braylon Edwards jumps for. He is guarded by Darius Butler and Lee Bodden. As he falls, Butler and Bodden fireman carry Edwards 55 yards and drop him in the end zone, thus a safety, according to the NFL rule book. Another variation is that Butler and Bodden fireman carry Edwards to the sideline and drop him out of bounds. Since there’s no pushouts anymore, it is an incomplete pass.

Makes sense, right? It’s basically what the Colts did to the Pats last Sunday night.
It’s not forward progress…he never got 2 feet down for possession.
And I know they’d get outrunned and tackled (all 3 of them) before they could make it 55 yards, but it’s still a nice loss of 10+.

Good question. I’d have to say technically yes as odd as it sounds.

They wouldn’t be able to carry him that far.

A little rule called "forward progress".
Once a player is ‘in the grasp’, (including fireman carry!), he is ruled down.

nope, because its forward progress isnt it? Just think, if a reciever catches a ball in the air, past the first down marker, and he is tackled and pushed back even to the line of scrimmage (hypothetically) what happens?

it all depends if he bobbled the ball. thats the case in colts/pats game. but for the jets game, who cares jets S U C K S
Longhorns (10-0) | Nov 18, 2009

The first play is not legal because of the forward progress rule, which puts the ball at the furthest point up the field that the player with the ball got to before being tackled or otherwise stopped from moving forward.
I’m not too sure about the second play.

Forward Progress would make this not possible
Ryan | Nov 18, 2009

The forward progress rule would whistle this play dead immediately; as others have said.
